Taco Bell vegetarian options
Taco Bell has one of the most vegetarian-friendly menus in U.S. fast food — partly because beans and rice are core building blocks of so many items. This guide covers the certified vegetarian menu, vegan-friendly modifications, hidden non-vegetarian ingredients to watch for, and the simple swaps that turn almost any item meat-free.
AVA-certified vegetarian menu
Taco Bell partners with the American Vegetarian Association (AVA) to certify a portion of its menu as vegetarian. AVA certification confirms that the item contains no meat, fish, or poultry and is prepared in a way that meets vegetarian standards. The certified list rotates as the menu evolves, but typically includes the Bean Burrito, Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, Cheesy Roll Up, Black Bean Crunchwrap Supreme, Power Menu Bowl (veggie), Spicy Potato Soft Taco, Crunchy Taco (with beans instead of beef), and Cinnamon Twists.

Make almost any item vegetarian
Three simple swaps cover most of the menu:
- Beef → Beans: swap seasoned beef for refried beans on any taco, burrito, or specialty for no extra charge.
- Beef → Black Beans: some stores offer black beans as the swap; ask if you prefer them.
- Beef → Potatoes: on items that already include the spicy potato bites (or when potatoes are available as an add-on).
These swaps work on Crunchwrap Supreme, Chalupa Supreme, Burrito Supreme, the 5-Layer Burrito, Quesadillas, Nachos BellGrande, and most other menu items.
Vegan modifications
Going fully vegan means removing dairy as well. Order any vegetarian item without:
- Cheese (cheddar, three-cheese blend, nacho cheese sauce).
- Sour cream (the "reduced-fat" sour cream contains dairy).
- Creamy sauces such as Avocado Ranch, Chipotle sauce, and Spicy Ranch.
Items naturally close to vegan with no cheese: the Bean Burrito (no cheese, no sour cream), the Black Bean Crunchwrap (no cheese, no sour cream), the Spicy Tostada, and a side of black beans and rice. Guacamole, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, and the four hot sauces (Mild, Hot, Fire, Diablo) are vegan-friendly.
Ingredients to watch for
A few items have hidden animal ingredients. The seasoned rice contains chicken fat at some locations (ask), so order black beans and plain rice if you want to be sure. The traditional fried tostada shell, chalupa shell, and Crunchwrap shell are all vegan-friendly. The flour tortillas are vegan. The crunchy taco shells are vegan. Cinnamon Twists are vegan. The "Cheesy Roll Up" obviously contains cheese.
